This afternoon we had our first class of a 6-week Refashion & Jewellery Making Programme that Foróige (C.R.I.B. Sligo) asked me to devise. C.R.I.B. is a safe, non-threatening environment where teenagers can be themselves, meet new people, make friends, seek support and overcome difficulties. I’m thrilled to be part of this initiative and I must say I enjoyed this class so much.
The aim of my classes is to encourage young people to be resourceful and reimagine, repurpose, recycle and refashion.
All materials are supplied and the classes only cost €5!
All the girls got stuck in straight away and just look at what they came up with! I absolutely love this piece. It’s so unique and unusual.
As always, I loved how different everyone’s interpretation was. Some chose crescent shaped collars, others opted for the classic Peter Pan style. We went with fresh, bright, youthful colours – perfect for the summer. The girls recycled vintage buttons, gems, feathers and beads from old jewellery and whatever trinkets they could find in my box of treasures.
I’ve been collecting bits and bobs for years. My mum always holds on to bits and pieces she knows I’ll do something with… even the ribbons from boxes of chocolates. That turquoise ribbon is 12 years old… I bought it in either Hickeys Fabric shop in Dublin or Galway for my Debs back in the day to match my dress. I made my own jewellery set for my grad and used that ribbon to customise my bag.
I think you’ll agree that the girls made some fab pieces.
The course runs for 5 more weeks. You will learn basic beaded jewellery making skills (earrings, necklaces, bracelets) and create hair and fashion accessories from preloved garments e.g. scarves and hair bows.
