If only we could be two places at one time! It’s a pity when events clash. I got a fabulous invitation to McElhinney’s Bridal Rooms for Thursday night – their very first blogger event and overnight stay at Villa Rose hotel, but I chose to go to The Blog Awards instead. I knew I’d be wondering ‘what if?’ otherwise. The invite came in a big box with a heart shaped helium balloon. You can see it on my Instagram.
I know I look a bit mish-mash, but I got ready in the car…My dress was a gift from Boohoo as they were sponsoring the Best Fashion Blog catergory. I picked up my accessories from Oxfam and The Curiosity Shop on my lunch break: jet beads, a headband, brooches and my turquoise vintage shoes cost €6.50! They’re so comfortable and I’ll definitely be wearing them with jeans. My hair was a bit of a disaster, but it worked out OK with the overall look.
Another awards ceremony, another empty hand. Not to worry – it may happen when the time is right. I certainly didn’t deserve an award in the past as I was only ever long listed and wasn’t blogging regularly – just sharing the odd post on Facebook. It’s always a little boost to get nominated and I was thrilled to make the shortlist alone (100 down to 44) and honestly couldn’t believe my luck making the final – top 12 in Ireland! Thanks to everyone who voted for me – this accounted for 30%. I tried to up my game with more regular fashion posts as I was nominated for Best Fashion Blog – so I’m sorry if I was clogging up your news feeds with my mug – I’m always aware of this. That’s why I prefer snapchat (@moda_fix) for sharing. You’re not conscious of annoying people – they’ll click on your story if they’re interested. The evening was probably never going to go my way. I drove straight to Dublin after work and took one wrong turn and got stuck in traffic. Once I finally made it into the city – I was behind a horse and cart! I got parked up and had to change in the car – in the dark (hoping there were no voyeurs lurking around!) The glamour of it all! Then I started doing my make-up and a couple of guys (Rieger and Barend) who were parked beside me offered me the use of the mirror in their camper van! This was the highlight of my night. I love these chance encounters and random acts of kindness. There was a group of them over from South Africa for the Rugby World Cup. As I did my make-up in a rush they poured me a glass of South African wine and we chatted. It reminded me of the joy and spontaneity of being on my own travels. It’s the little mundane things in life that please most… not the glamour. I just love those moments where your faith in humanity is restored. The Blog Awards ceremony took place at Tivoli Theatre on Francis Street. The theme was 1920’s burlesque. Everyone was dolled up looking spectacular – headdresses, fringing, bling, waves, feather boas, pearls. I met up with fellow bloggers Elaine and Claire of Price Regan Interiors and Studio Fourteen Blog who were nominated for two awards and scooped up the silver prize for Best Innovation Blog.I’m thrilled for these girls and they have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline so stay tuned to their Facebook updates. We first met a few months ago at Lough Allen Hotel where we were guest speakers at a fundraiser for Childhood Days for children with learning difficulties. The girls talked interiors and I talked style. I had a few issues setting up my PowerPoint as I was working from a mac and I couldn’t believe how patient the girls were with me. They helped me so much and managed to get my PowerPoint up and running! I don’t know what I would have done without them.
The entertainment was raunchy burlesque dancing and it went down well with the crowd. I gave you a wee glimpse on snapchat (@moda_fix). The choice of food was brilliant – it was outdoors and it was street-style food. I tried Eathos for the first time – wholesome food makes you happy as they say.
Here is the winner of Best Fashion Blog: Just Kassi.I planned going to bed at midnight, but ended up at another awards ceremony at City West: EY Entrepreneur of the Year. The Collison brothers of Stripe took home the top prize. Talk about glamour. It was one of the most glamorous affairs I’d been at for a long long time: full length gowns, sparkle… I loved eyeing up the style. The band was fantastic as was the whole set-up. City West hotel is beautiful. We danced until the early hours and after very little sleep I drove to work the next morning. The most pleasant surprise was this – not a parking ticket, but a bottle of wine, mini toblerones and a ‘Thank You’ note from Barend and Rieger. When does that happen? So I didn’t win, but what a night! It’s never a waste of time attending events, even if they’re a little far away. You always take something home, make a new connection or learn something in the process.
Now to catch up on sleep…
