This weekend we took a little trip to Ashford Castle.
I had never been before so I jumped at the chance to pay a visit. Well, I very slowly sat into the car and was driven there. I can’t drive for 6 weeks after my ovary ordeal. The castle is in Cong, Co. Mayo. Cong’s claim to fame is that The Quiet Man was filmed there. Once you arrive at the gate the drive is beautiful and then you reach the bridge and main entrance and you can’t help but say: Wow!It’s a 5 star hotel, voted No.2 hotel in Ireland by TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2016 and it’s home to Ireland’s first School of Falconry. The grounds are spectacular with 350 acres of woodland. The decor is one of grandeur and it boasts the craftsmanship of my cousin and uncle of Loughnane’s Joinery. I gave you a virtual tour inside the rooms and suites on snapchat (moda_fix) and mentioned that they did much of the panelling, bedroom doors, windows, shutters, bathroom vanity units and woodwork in the state-of-the-art spa. It really is impressive! See more of their work here. It’s all in the details: a decanter of sherry on the dresser and I just adore the ensuite. The shower could fit a small army. While the others enjoyed the spa, I explored the dining rooms. The scones are served freshly baked and they are to die for topped with lemon curd, clotted cream and jam. They really are delicious. I took to eating all the cream and lemon curd with a spoon! Later we enjoyed lunch and afternoon tea and if I had to recommend one: it would be sweet over savoury here. See menu here.
I’d really love to go back with a group of friends and I think this would be such a fabulous idea for a civilised hen party! Book here.Staff members are welcoming and friendly and they can’t do enough for you.
