For all the last minute shoppers out there!
This gift guide was published in Sligo Now Magazine at the start of this month, but I decided to post it on my blog for anyone who needs some last minute gift ideas and wants to source their gifts locally. Everything listed is either available at our independent boutiques in Sligo or handmade by our local designers and makers.
For her: Top of my wish list this Christmas is the AE Weekend bag from The Atlantic Equipment Project’s AE LUX range. AE Weekend is perfect for a city break getaway and makes for stylish carry-on luggage. It has a classic aesthetic, with craftsmanship and quality fabrics at its core. The waxed cotton and the Cordura base provide waterproof protection with heavy duty cotton handles. AE Weekend is a travel must-have.
For him: Ideal for a hike, leisurely stroll or to carry a laptop, the AE Rolltop Backpack design allows for an adjustable volume of the pack, so you can carry a little or a lot. The backpack is waterproof, and perfect for woodland walks or study days at the library. Its base is of high abrasion resistant Cordura. This pack fits a 15 inch laptop nicely, along with all the other kit necessary for a day out. Buy locally at The Cat And The Moon or visit www.theatlanticequipmentproject.com.
For mum: Women love quality pieces of timeless jewellery to mark special occasions. Anything Martina Hamilton is synonymous with quality. My personal favourites are her Shore and Oyster pearl collections, but her latest collection is called “Island Link” and it’s inspired by a recent discovery of family links to Dernish Island. Martina’s great great grandmother lived there. Gold and silver pieces include earrings, bangles, bracelets and pendants. There’s something to cater for every budget and taste. MH collections are available locally at The Cat And The Moon or online at www.martinahamilton.ie.
CÁIT & I
New kid on the block Cáit & I offer a huge range of unique gifts, hand-selected by sisters Tara and Kathleen (Cáit), ensuring that there is something of interest for all ages. Cáit & I stock quality, handmade goods and support local design, including: Mulholland Jewellery, Graham Reid Designs, prints by Reddin Designs, jewellery from Edge Only, Scribble & Stone and goldsmith Tiffany Budd, shrawls by Nichola MacEvilly, accessories by LX Upcycle (made from recycled wetsuits, kites, sails and bike tyres), ail + el homeware and Kathleen’s crocheted accessories.
For kids: pick up an aran sweater or handmade toys.
Browse the full range on www.caitandi.com.
For Dad: My go-to store every Christmas is Dooney’s on O’Connell Street. Tried and tested, an aran sweater is the gift that stands the test of time. Dads love this traditional geansaí; we love them too! For her: try an aran Boyfriend Cardigan in bánín (natural, off-white shade).
TIFFANY BUDD & GRAHAM REID
For her: As you may be aware, I make my own range of handmade jewellery using shells, handpicked from Sligo’s beaches. They are very simple, but elegant pieces for everyday wear. My pearly white pendants and earrings (perfect matches in various sizes) are stocked at the popular Little Shop at Shells Café in Strandhill. Alternatively, you can contact me directly via Facebook (Modafix) or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Packing is sustainable, materials are sourced locally from independent craft shops and you can read all about the concept behind my creations here. They are an ideal gift for anyone with an affiliation to Sligo, especially for people from Sligo, but living abroad. Wear a little piece of home wherever you go! Afterall, Sligeach means ‘abounding in shells.’
For her: Need a new winter coat or Christmas party look? Shop locally at Anna’s. Vouchers are available too. Labels stocked include Native Youth, Lavish Alice, Rails, The Fifth Label, Toupy, A Postcard from Brighton, Bodyfrock, Charli, Matt & Nat and Dr Denim.
Native Youth is a contemporary, minimal brand at an affordable price point,
Bodyfrock is designed with sculpting slips in each of their dresses, streamlining the silhouette.
Charli offers timeless, quality pieces in cashmere, silk and super soft jersey fabrics.
Dr Denim is a Swedish denim brand offering styles from €55.00.
Matt & Nat is an eco-friendly accessories brand from Montreal, Canada. Matt & Nat (which stands for Mat(t)erial and Nature) products are all made from vegan and sustainable materials such as cork, plastic, recycled nylons and rubber. They recycle approximately 1 million plastic bottles per year and end up with backpacks, chic handbags and purses.
For the family: If in doubt, buy a trusty hamper from Kate’s Kitchen. They really do stock ‘the best of everything’ in terms of fine foods, quality wine and luxury skincare products (Ren, Voya, Kinvara, Mama Mio, Neom). Vouchers are always a great gift too.
I hope that helps!
Happy shopping and have a very merry Christmas.
